This month NORTHAMPTON COMMUNITY FOUNDATION (NCF) held the fourth in their series of Community Conversations focusing on UN SDG 5 Gender Equality. In the week of International Women’s Day, with a world focus this year on “choose to challenge”, our Head of Philanthropy Mary Hollands and staff champion for this UN SDG opened this conversation and spoke personally about why she chose to be the ambassador for this goal.   In her accompanying blog Mary reported, “The pandemic has only heightened the inequalities women face with 70% of health and social care workers being women, working in care homes and the NHS, on the front line of this health crisis.”       To read Mary’s blog in full on UN SDG 5 Gender Equality, click here

Thank you to our guest speakers – Suzy van Rooyen DL from the Good Loaf CIC, Deepa Bakrania from Dostiyo Asian Women and Girls Organisation, Nina Robinson from Rush 2 the Den , Lauren Payne from AVON Cosmetics Ltd, and Jo Gordon from the Royal & Derngate Theatre.   Each guest speaker, from community groups, businesses, and fundholders, spoke passionately about how they have been working to help tackle and support gender equality in our county, generating conversation on future community solutions to meet this goal.   Thank you to our Chair Mr Paul Southworth OBE, DL who closed the conversation by thanking our panellists for the amazing work they are doing across the county, and drawing on his own experiences of the shifting gender equality landscape during his career in industry.  As panellist Jo Gordon said, ‘we need to shift the power.’   Thank you to everyone who joined us to hear from our guest panellists on how they are helping to tackle, support and promote Gender Equality locally.

If you were unable to join us, you can watch the full recording of the Community Conversation on our YouTube channel here. We will continue to highlight this Conversation over the next few weeks on our social media platforms – Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.   The Conversation will continue. We will update you all on the thoughts, actions and solutions that the Conversation ignited advising the next actions that the Community Foundation can do to work with the community to tackle this and support groups to work towards achieving this goal by the global target of 2030.

We look forward to seeing you in April for the next Conversation in the series in which we focus on UN SDG 4 Quality Education which is championed by our Philanthropy and Events Officer Rachel Cooke.   For more information on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) please visit our website: Read More   All the conversations in the series are being recorded and are available to view on the NCF YouTube channel.
