A CHANCE FOR YOU OR YOUR CHURCH TO USE AND HELP A GROUP OF YOUNG VOLUNTEERS

CAN YOU OR YOUR CHURCH USE AND HELP A GROUP OF YOUNG VOLUNTEERS?

From: Suzanne James, NCS Programme Manager, Northants,  a member of Abington Avenue URC and the programme manager for National Citizen Service in Northants.

“I will be taking over 1000 15-17 year olds through the four week government funded programme this summer from the beginning of July through to the end of August.

The young people spend a week at an activity centre doing outdoor challenges, a week at a university building up their life skills and then return to Northampton to plan and prepare a 30 hour community project.

This equates to 68 teams across the county most of whom are based in Northampton.   Whilst we may think that all these young people trying to help make a difference in their community is a good thing sadly many of the young people find it hard to carry out their projects as they struggle to find contacts willing to work with them over the summer holidays. As you can imagine places like Weston Favell and Brixworth country park become tired of requests from teams and the young people can become disheartened when door after door is shut in their faces.

There are lots of ways churches could get involved with the programme, I wondered if this is something we could advertise through your newsletter and website?

  1. There may be church members who would enjoy the challenge of working with young people this summer, we have around 60 places for people to be team assistants.  This would involve coming on programme with the young people and is suitable for those of all ages! You will receive training and a DBS check.  Team assistants are paid minimum wage in line with their age.  People can email me Suzie James on sjames@ufa.org.uk or visit our website for more information https://ufa.org.uk/home/who-we-are/work-with-us/
  2. There may be church members with a background in the third sector, business etc who would be willing to volunteer for one afternoon to sit on our dragon’s den panel as the young people pitch their ideas for the community.  We need a panel of 2/3 members of the community for each of the 6 weeks.  This will run every Thursday 1-3pm from the 18th July through to 22nd August.
  3. There may be churches who have projects the young people could get involved with.  The young people come in teams of 15 supervised by one of our staff members, (if you require a higher ratio then let me know) and can complete projects from gardening, to running a children’s activity, to renovating a room or fundraising to purchase equipment for the benefit of the local community.  The project will need to demonstrate the difference that will be made to the community.
  4. There may be churches who are happy to host a bake sale, movie night or other event.  If you are willing can we add you to a directory of friendly people the young people can contact in the summer.

To offer any assistance you can give in making this summer even better for the young people of Northampton, please ….
